Rhodes Scholars

Bishops was the first recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship, and Bishops, along with the other three schools, SACS, Paul Roos, and St Andrew’s College, were named in the Will. The fours schools sent scholars drawn from the school body up until 2012, when at the urging of the Rhodes Trust, the four schools widened their catchment areas to include partner schools, so that the Scholarship could go to a wider body of applicants. The Bishops Rhodes Scholarship then included pupils from Bishops, St Cyprian’s School, St George’s Grammar School, Herschel Girls School and the LEAP 1 School. Bishops boys were also eligible to apply for one of the four SA-at-Large scholarships, and three ODs were in fact awarded Scholarships. In 2024, the Rhodes Trustees suspended the schools’ scholarships and allocated the resources formerly given to the schools to the South-Africa-at-Large scholarships.
